Outcome-Based Research Improves Health Care Quality
Posted 12/8/2003

Members of The Science Advisory advocate that outcome-based research has the potential to significantly improve health care quality.  In a recent poll, 45% of the 400 participants believe that collecting and evaluating data on real world clinical practices is the best way to improve the value of today’s medical care.  While quality was the most important enhancement, SAB members also thought that in-depth analysis of treatments and best practices would increase both the efficiency (31%) and cost effectiveness (24%) of the health care patients receive. “I believe that this emphasis on quality,” states Dr. Tamara Zemlo, Director of The Science Advisory Board, “has become more prominent as researchers consider the patient’s perspective in evaluating the care they are receiving.” Incorporating the patient’s perspective helps design the most successful types of interventions that will improve future health outcomes.
