Good Game!
Posted 6/8/2004

This study was designed to learn more about what strengths and qualities our members associate with their primary suppliers of products for molecular biology.

We gave our members a chance to show their creative side with the bonus question.  We posed the following situation to our members:  Your primary supplier is sponsoring a country's table tennis team at the upcoming Summer Olympics. You enter a contest to help promote the company’s image and products to researchers around the world in the hopes of winning the grand prize: an all-expense paid trip to the Athens Games.  The contest involves creating a catchy tagline that will be appliquéd to the back of the polo shirts worn by the team. The tagline needs to capture the attention of scientists watching this popular event in hopes that it will encourage them to visit their Web site and buy their products. What phrase or sentence would you come up with and why?

This was a tricky decision as we had over 1,600 members take part and some of the tag-lines were pure genious!  I think we may have some members with a hidden talent for marketing.  Since the responses were so unique we had trouble choosing just three and decided instead to award six of our members with a $20 gift certificate to amazon.com.  Here’s what our winner’s teams will be wearing in the Olympics:

What if Hippocrates had Qiagen?
Explanation: Hippocrates was an ancient Greek physician and scientist (I thought it would be appropriate since the Olympics are being held in Athens).
Katherine, Staff Scientist, North America

We LOVE the NET prices and quality of BD Biosciences.
Explanation: Because there are 2 puns in the phrase that apply both to tennis and to BD Biosciences.
Joan, Staff Scientist, North America

STOP making "Ping-Pong"* decisions. Choose NOVAGEN *(In German "Ping-Pong" is another word for table-tennis.).
Explanation:  Because I hate unsatisfactory results, I like clear results.
Gertraud, Laboratory Technician, Europe

Smash the competition with Bio-Rad equipment and reagents.
Explanation: The smash is one of the most common yet exciting return shots in table tennis, and the term "smash" is used metaphorically in the tagline.
Joe, Principal Investigator, North America

Amersham Biosciences: Give your lab more ping than pong.
Explanation:  Easy to remember and not too serious.
Ben, Laboratory Technician, Australasia/Pacific

Affymetrix Genolympics.
Explanation: Olympics: synonymous for race, challenge, competition, contest gene; gene expression genolympics:  the race for gene expression.
Michel, Lab Director/Supervisor/Coordinator, Europe

Perhaps the next time Coca-Cola needs a new ad campaign they will turn to the SAB!  To take a look at the rest of witty catch-phrases, please click here . Be sure to check out the Study Snapshot for a complete review of this study.  Congratulations!
