SAB NewsWinner of the "Mass Spectrometry Market" Study AnnouncedPosted 4/11/2005 The Science Advisory Board surveyed more than 1000 life scientists in order to examine the application and usage of mass spectrometry, as well as the types of spectrometers researchers are using. A summary of the study's highlights is available on the The SAB Study Snapshots Web page. As a token of our appreciation, study participants were entered in an additional drawing for a $20 gift certificate from Amazon.com. We are excited to announce that a professor from Canada, screenname: Apismellifera, was the contest winner. When asked to provide a comment to the following question, "What do you perceive to be the greatest challenge with regards to the adoption of mass spectrometry by life scientists" Apismellifera stated: "Specialized expertise required. Companies are trying to peddle 'black box' MS instruments where you just plug and play but the people using these instruments without any MS training are getting garbage data and trying to make sense of it. The marketing of extremely poor resolution 'biomarker discovery' instruments to physicians is making things even worse because the data gets published without being reviewed by mass spec experts, contributing further to the garbage out there." SAB Members can contribute their own thoughts regarding the study by accessing The Science Advisory Board's Online Discussion Forum. The Science Advisory Board wishes to thank everyone whose participation contributed to the sucess of the study. The Science Advisory Board provides opportunities for its Members to earn honoraria each and every time they participate in SAB-sponsored studies. Interested in becoming a member? |
