SAB NewsFraudulent Finds and Funding FiascosPosted 7/18/2005 On July 29, The Science Advisory Board, in conjunction with the D.C. Science Writers Association, will host a Café Scientifique in Washington D.C. All local Science Advisory Board members or those who are visiting from out-of-town are invited to attend. This Café Scientifique will address research fraud, specifically the falsification and fabrication of data, and the ethical issues surrounding the reporting of such fraud to the authorities. Our guest will be Walter F. DeNino, 28, who is currently a graduate student at Columbia University in New York City. As an undergraduate technician in Eric Poehlman's lab at the University of Vermont, he was principally responsible for uncovering the largest research fraud in the history of the National Institutes of Health. As the whistleblower in the case, Eric was subjected to threats of lawsuits and harassment. The discussion will begin at 6:00 PM at The Back Room of Regional Food and Drink, 810 7th Street NW, Washington D.C. (The restaurant’s Web site is http://rfdwashington.com/.) There will be no charge to attend this event for Science Advisory Board members. Please contact Dr. Tamara Zemlo to R.S.V.P. for this event by July 26. We hope that you can attend!
