Practical Problem Solving in HPLC
by Stavros Kromidas
Wiley-VCH, 2004

When I purchased this book I did so looking for a book that I could quickly refer to if my peaks flattened or the back-pressure varied. This book provides that guidance and much more.

It is useful for anyone involved in HPLC, particularly those with limited service contracts or people who feel confident enough to try and attempt to diagnose the issue or even remedy it.

It can help with method development in so much as advising which columns, buffers and equipment to use in generalized HPLC testing, trouble shooting through a 'flick through' style guide for the common niggles with HPLC and some of the more unusual problems as well as optimizing chromatogram readouts and improving peak separations.

The downside to the book is that it often leaves you hankering for more information, particularly if the problem becomes more frequent or the suggestions just don't quite fix the issue completely.

On the plus side, Kromidas has also released a further trouble-shooting guide 'More Practical Problem Solving in HPLC' which has many more tips, solutions and guidance for all levels of HPLC users.

In conclusion, this book is definitely one for any HPLC user's bookshelf, being easy to access and pin point trouble-shooting tips in minutes, but I would tend to use it in combination with a more in-depth HPLC text to build on the suggestions it has provided.
