Highlights
Erika Cheung and Tyler Shultz, two of the whistleblowers who helped bring down Theranos, will speak in a fireside chat at the 2022 AACC Annual Scientific Meeting & Clinical Lab Expo in Chicago on Tuesday, July 26, at 1 p.m. U.S. Central Time. The fireside chat comes in the wake of recent fraud convictions for Theranos executives Elizabeth Holmes and Ramesh Balwani.
The Verifying Accurate Leading-edge IVCT Development (VALID) Act would significantly alter the regulation of laboratory developed tests (LDTs). If enacted, VALID would create new duplicative FDA requirements for laboratories that perform LDTs on top of the already stringent regulatory framework overseen by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) through the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA). Throughout 2022, AACC's primary advocacy focus has been on preventing the passage of the Act.
A scientific session on July 25 will cover the legislation Congress has introduced and the potential impact on laboratory medicine. The session, "VALID, VITAL, LDT" will be led by experts with experience in both advocacy and LDTs in the lab.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, clinical laboratories across the world have been challenged in many ways, including having to contend with clinically significant variability in test results that are amplified at the international level.
How labs are dealing with these challenges will be discussed during a roundtable session, "Clinical Laboratory Leadership and Management During a Pandemic: A Global Perspective," on Tuesday, July 26 at the 2022 AACC Annual Scientific Meeting in Chicago.
Dr. Barnali Das, consultant in laboratory medicine for Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital in Mumbai, India, will explore effective leadership strategies for process re-engineering, time management, resource and personnel management, team development, strategic planning, global harmonization, and cost of ownership.
